Microsoft Outlook setup for IMAP (CSAIL email)
Windows 11 Outlook (classic)
- Test your IMAP password at https://webmail.csail.mit.edu/horde
- You can reset your IMAP password at https://imap.csail.mit.edu with active CSAIL OIDC authentication credentials.
- If you need to reset your CSAIL OIDC/Kerberos password, please visit TIG in 32-270 with photo ID or send an email to help@csail.mit.edu with a selfie of yourself holding photo ID to receive a password reset link.
- You can reset your IMAP password at https://imap.csail.mit.edu with active CSAIL OIDC authentication credentials.
- Start Outlook (classic) for the first time, or go to ‘File’ ‘Add Account’ enter: <username>@csail.mit.edu ‘Advanced options’ select ‘Let me set up my account manually’ ‘Connect’
- Select ‘IMAP’
- Enter the following:
Incoming Mail Server: imap.csail.mit.edu Port: 143 Encryption Method: STARTTLS Outgoing Mail Server: outgoing.csail.mit.edu Port: 587 Encryption Method: STARTTLS‘Next’
- Enter: <IMAP_password>
- Within the new ‘Internet Email’ pop-up window, for the ‘User Name’ field, reduce <username>@csail.mit.edu to only <username>
- Click ‘OK’ ‘Done’
macOS Microsoft Outlook
If this is the first time you run macOS Microsoft Outlook, you’ll see a welcome screen. If so, skip to step 0.
If you’ve previously completed the macOS Microsoft Outlook setup wizard (you already had an account for example), go to the top menu bar and click ‘Outlook’ ‘Settings’ ‘Accounts’ ‘Add Account’
- Test your IMAP password at https://webmail.csail.mit.edu/horde
- You can reset your IMAP password at https://imap.csail.mit.edu with active CSAIL OIDC authentication credentials.
- If you need to reset your CSAIL OIDC/Kerberos password, please visit TIG in 32-270 with photo ID or send an email to help@csail.mit.edu with a selfie of yourself holding photo ID to receive a password reset link.
- You can reset your IMAP password at https://imap.csail.mit.edu with active CSAIL OIDC authentication credentials.
- Enter: <username>@csail.mit.edu ‘Continue’
- Select ‘IMAP’ ‘Sign In’
- Enter the following:
Email address: <username>@csail.mit.edu IMAP Username: <username> (delete "@csail.mit.edu") IMAP Password: <IMAP_password> IMAP Incoming Server: imap.csail.mit.edu Port: 993 "Use SSL to connect..." SMTP Username: <username> (delete "@csail.mit.edu") SMTP Password: <IMAP_password> SMTP Outgoing Server: outgoing.csail.mit.edu Port: 465 "Use SSL to connect..." - Click ‘Add Account’
If you are experiencing difficulties with Outlook, you can try switching to Legacy Outlook. To do so, in the top menu bar, click on ‘Outlook’ ‘Legacy Outlook’.
Additional notes

Does Outlook display the “wrong inbox” when you start up? (A blank folder within
Personal Folders, rather than your CSAIL IMAP Inbox.) If so:- Go to Tools/Options
- Click the “Other” tab
- Click “Advanced Options”
- Next to “Startup in this folder:", click “Browse…”
- Navigate to the Inbox inside your CSAIL account and click it to select
- Click “OK” until you’re back to the normal view.

Does Outlook save messages to the “wrong Sent folder”? (Sent Items within
Personal Folders, rather than your CSAIL IMAP Sent folder.) If so:- Go to Tools/Account Settings
- Double-click your IMAP account
- Click the “More settings” button
- Click the “Folders” tab
- Select “Choose an existing folder…to save sent items…”
- Click the “Sent” folder underneath your IMAP account to select it
- Click “OK” until you’re back to the normal view.
